| Still Human Still Here: Destitution of
the Refused Asylum Seekers |
| UK / 2007 / 12 min / English |
| Marc Hoeferlin, Barney Broomfield |
| |
| Synopsis |
| |
| Still Human Still Here depicts the predicament of refused UK asylum
seekers who are denied support or the right to work, even if they are
evidently unable to return to their country. Many are living from hand to
mouth, with all avenues to a normal life blocked. They may suffer abject
poverty while relying on others to survive, sometimes going hungry and
sleeping in the streets. Some even seem to have lost the will to live. The
'Still Human Still Here' campaign calls on the UK government to end the
use of destitution as a policy tool against refused asylum-seekers. |

| Director's Biography |
| |
| Marc Hoeferlin and Barney Broomfield first
began working together in the summer of 2007 when
Amnesty International contacted them to make a film
about destitute asylum seekers in an effort to help
change current UK Government policy towards the
dismal existence of asylum seekers around the country.
The film was launched at the Labour Party Conference
2007. Having both worked on the feature film Battle
for Haditha, they continued their research into the
Haditha massacre, leading them to make On That
Day. |

| Asylum seekers escape unstable and insecure conditions in their home countries. Upon arrival, they are not granted
refuge but are caught in an immigration purgatory; they cannot stay, they cannot be forced home, and they fear threat to
life if they return. In order to ensure safe haven for those seeking refuge, governments must ensure quality legal advice and
representation and accommodation to ensure that those fleeing persecution have an honest chance at asylum. |
