Synopsis

In a squatter settlement in South Africa called Freedom Park, a group of HIV-infected former sex-workers, created a network called Tapologo. They learn to be Home Based Carers for their community, transforming degradation into solidarity and squalor into hope along with retired nurses, social workers and religious leaders. Catholic bishop Kevin Dowling participates in Tapologo, and raises doubts on the official doctrine of the Catholic Church regarding AIDS and sexuality in the African context.

The Rights Angle 2009

South Africa has the highest rate of HIV infection in the world, with 5.5 million cases reported in 2006, over 3 million of which are women. Often times, sexual exploitation and prostitution result in HIV/AIDS infection, which in turn leads to the additional abuses of stigmatization and discrimination. Infected persons deserve an equal right to access health care, enjoy a life of dignity, and have the opportunity for economic empowerment and freedom.
