Rightful Place
Kenya / U.S.A / 2007 / 16 / Endorois
Produced by WITNESS, Comissao Pastoral da Terra (CPT) and Center for Justice and International Law (CEJIL)

Synopsis

In 1974, the Endorois community were evicted from their land by the Kenyan government to make way for a game reserve and tourist resort. The community continues to struggle for reparation for their loss and restitution to their land. Yet, their efforts have been met only with denial, harassment and further eviction by successive Kenyan governments; this time to make way for mineral mining. Through the personal stories of members of the Endorois community, Rightful Place narrates the impact of displacement on individual, identity and community and of the struggle of the Endorois to reclaim their rightful place.

Director's Biography

WITNESS is an international human rights organisation that provides training and support to local groups to use video in their human rights advocacy campaigns. Comissao Pastoral da Terra (CPT) is a non governmental organisation that defends the right to land, access to water, just labour laws and human dignity of agricultural workers in Brazil. Center for Justice and International Law's (CEJIL) principle objective is to achieve the full implementation of international human rights norms in the member states of the Organisation of the American States (OAS) through the use of the Inter-American System for the Protection of Human Rights and other international protection mechanisms.

The Rights Angle 2009

The Endorois eviction from their ancestral lands without reparation, representation or participation is a direct violation of their property rights as their entire spiritual, cultural and economic ties to the land are denied. This indigenous, pastoral community therefore suffers from severe poverty and inadequate infrastructure because the Kenyan government refuses to provide adequate compensation or benefits from the reserve that now occupies the land.
